The Care Certificate is a set of standards that social care and health workers stick to in their daily working life. It is the new minimum standards that should be covered as part of the induction training of new care workers. The Care Certificate was developed jointly by Skills for Care, Health Education England and Skills for Health.  The Care Certificate:

  • Applies across social care and health,
  • Links to National Occupational Standards and units in qualifications, and
  • Covers what is needed to be caring – giving workers a sound basis from which they can develop their knowledge and skills.

What is mental health?

Mental health is a level of psychological well-being or an absence of mental illness. It is the “psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioural adjustment.”

What is dementia?

The word ‘dementia’ describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These changes are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia, they have become severe enough to affect daily life. A person with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behaviour.

What is a learning disability?

A learning disability is a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities – for example, household tasks, socialising or managing money – which affects someone for their whole life.

What is a disability?

Definition of disability under the Equality Act 2010 – “You’re disabled under the Equality Act 2010 if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities”.
