The\u00a0Mental Health Act\u00a01983 (c.20) is an\u00a0Act\u00a0of the Parliament of the United Kingdom which applies to people in England and Wales. It covers the reception, care and treatment of mentally disordered persons, the management of their property and other related matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a02007 Mental Health Act\u00a0made several key changes to the 1983\u00a0Mental Health Act, which laid down provision for the compulsory detention and treatment of people with\u00a0mental health\u00a0problems in England and Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Act stipulates the criteria for detention or ‘sectioning’, information about different sections and the rights of someone who has been detained. The\u00a0Mental\u00a0Health\u00a0Act is the law which sets out when you can be admitted, detained and treated in hospital against your wishes. It is also known as being ‘sectioned’.<\/span><\/p>\n
