    What is first aid?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    First aid is the assistance given to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery.<\/p>\n

    What is cardiopulmonary resuscitation?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Cardiopulmonary resuscitation\u00a0(CPR) is an\u00a0emergency procedure\u00a0that combines chest compressions often with\u00a0artificial ventilation\u00a0to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and to breathe in a person who is in\u00a0cardiac arrest. It is\u00a0recommended\u00a0in those who are unresponsive with no breathing or abnormal breathing, for example,\u00a0agonal respirations.<\/p>\n

    CPR involves chest compressions for adults between 5\u00a0cm (2.0\u00a0in) and 6\u00a0cm (2.4\u00a0in) deep and at a rate of at least 100 to 120 per minute. The rescuer may also provide artificial ventilation by either exhaling air into the subject\u2019s mouth or nose (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) or using a device that pushes air into the subject\u2019s lungs (mechanical ventilation). Current recommendations emphasise early and high-quality chest compressions over artificial ventilation; a simplified CPR method involving chest compressions only is recommended for untrained rescuers. In children, however, only doing compressions may result in worse outcomes.<\/p>\n

    What is an automated external defibrillator?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    An\u00a0automated external defibrillator\u00a0(AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening\u00a0cardiac\u00a0arrhythmias\u00a0of\u00a0ventricular fibrillation\u00a0and\u00a0pulseless ventricular tachycardia, and can treat them through\u00a0defibrillation, the application of electricity which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.<\/p>\n

    With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the layperson, and the use of AEDs is taught in many\u00a0first aid,\u00a0certified first responder, and\u00a0basic life support\u00a0(BLS) level\u00a0cardiopulmonary resuscitation\u00a0(CPR) classes.<\/p>\n

    The portable version of the defibrillator was invented in the mid-1960s by\u00a0Frank Pantridge\u00a0in\u00a0Belfast,\u00a0Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n
